Fireworks History

The Origin

Fireworks trace their roots to ancient China, where early firecrackers were created during the Qin and Han dynasties by heating bamboo to make it explode — a symbol of driving away evil spirits.
The invention of gunpowder during the Tang Dynasty and its wider use in the Song Dynasty helped develop the art of fireworks used in celebrations.

Li Tian from Liuyang, Hunan, is traditionally regarded as a symbolic figure often associated with the early development of fireworks, representing China’s long-standing craftsmanship in this art form.

The Development

During the Yuan Dynasty, fireworks production spread beyond Liuyang and reached other regions and countries through trade routes.
By the Ming Dynasty, Liuyang had become one of China’s well-known fireworks production centres, with many local families involved in crafting fireworks for festivals and celebrations.

The Modern Era

Since China’s reform and opening-up, Liuyang fireworks have gained wider recognition at home and abroad for their quality and design.
Today, fireworks continue to symbolise joy and celebration, preserving a cultural heritage that began in China centuries ago.
